Sunday Solstice

I am very grateful for a sweet co-worker who sent me the following Neil Gaiman link. I've been struggling with my writing and my place in the world because of it.  Gaiman's words were soul-nourishing.  I don't say this lightly, I felt myself tearing up as I read his words. The fact that this co-worker sent me Gaiman related writing and it hit so close to home...well let's just say it leaves me a bit lost for words. I want to write more but it won't capture the depth of gratitude I feel at the moment.  Anyway, Friday I felt really lucky to be alive.

Anyway, today I spent the day taking care of laundry and packing whatever I can. I don't have too much left to pack.  Mostly clothes, toiletries, odds and ends. I could probably pack up the rest in a couple of hours.  Now all I have to do is land an apartment. I am grateful for the apartment coming my way.  It's been awhile since I've had a place all to myself...it's gonna be good no matter where I end up!!  * big cheesy smile *

Is there more?  Probably but I've written the most important parts down for now.
Peace,
L~

Bullet Point Entry

I haven't written in awhile.  For the most part, I've been busy with summer activities.

  • Still dealing with some health issues.  Altho things are on the upswing.  Yay! Not feeling quite so terrible.
  • I'm learning to spend time relaxing which is hard work for someone who is used to constantly working.  I was thinking about what my life was like several years ago: I was working several jobs to make ends meet, taking grad classes and making a go of my creative writing.  It's been quite the adjustment.
  • Last weekend, I even spent some time sunbathing in my backyard.  The day was warm with a rich breeze and I was so caught up in the book that I was reading that I burned.  Lots of Aloe Vera slathered on for several days after that.
  • June 24th, I went to see Tegan and Sara live in concert.  They were fantastic and I always enjoy their live performances.
  • June 27th, I went to see Neil Gaiman at Carnegie Hall. He read from a couple of stories while a string quartet played along as they projected graphic images. Loved it!  So much fun and a much appreciated birthday gift from a good friend.
  • I have also been suffering from a bad case of World Cup fever.  Sunday afternoon is a big game between Mexico and Netherlands.  Eek.  Can't wait!
  • I've been reading lots of fiction.  Currently reading Hate List by Jennifer Brown.  The writing is okay but it has some really decent emotional moments.
  • I've been pulling books from my overflowing bookshelves and setting them out for neighbors to scavenge.  I've managed to fill and give away two boxes of books.
What else?

  • My writing has stalled.  I've been writing on scrap paper again.  Can't quite get enough momentum on either of the pieces I've been working on.  So I keep writing bits and pieces.
  • I'm on my first week of giving up sugar. For the next six weeks, no fruit, no fruit juices, no sugar, no honey, no starchy veggies, no rice and no soda.  I'm just adding to my very long list of food restrictions. This getting healthy is hard work.
  • I have to add aerobics to my exercise routine. hmmm.  Again getting healthy is hard work.
  • Also, I am hooked on the Canadian sci-fi show Continuum.  I caught the first season on Netflix and now I'm moving through season 2.
  • Last but not least, I'm working on a new set of goals.  It's mid-year and I'm reassessing what I've accomplished so far.  Time for a new set  for the second half of the year.  I can't believe we are almost done with July...good lord, time seems to pick up speed as we get older.  Yikes!
Peace,
Lily~

Soggy Monday

July 1st. Monday. The day is wet and overcast and I am feeling soggy. My mood seems to be joining in with the weather.

On reading--Last week, I finished reading Neil Gaiman's new novel, The Ocean at the End of the Lane.  It was quite wonderful and there is this one moment, when I felt the writer looking into the abyss and the abyss looking back. It gave me goosebumps. It swallowed that book whole, I couldn't put it down. I admire his craft of writing.

On writing--I have to trust myself with my work...go out on that limb called faith...'cause right now I seem to be shying away from the writing. I spent last Friday writing up all my post-it notes for Indigo into a two-page cheat sheet to help keep me straight on characters and back stories. And there are so many holes...I'm afraid I am trying to plug the holes up while the dam is ready to break open. I seem to be continuing on the being all wet analogy.

On movies--Okay, I also went to see Much Ado About Nothing by my favorite writer/director, Joss Whedon.  It was really entertaining to see his modern version of this play in movie form. I'm not sure if it all of it worked but it was great to see so many actors from his previous shows join him in this venture.  I loved Nathan Fillion...he made me laugh the hardest but I think that was supposed to happen.  And Amy Acker as Beatrice really worked for me (she needs to be in a lot more movies) but I found Alexis Denisof's portrayal of Benedick a bit lackluster...with the exception of that one moment when he's working out and spouting his monologue. The act of working out helped his delivery of those lines. I really loved Denisof in Buffy and Angel and I wanted him to be funnier I guess.

On television--Lastly, Ray Donovan finally started on Sunday night on Showtime.  LOVE Liev Schrieber in this show...but more importantly Katherine Moennig is playing his assistant Lena. This woman is hot and I like her kick back acting vibe. God bless the working lesbians out (of the closet) in Hollywood!!

Peace,
L~
